New Application Process for Exchange Semesters: What Bachelor’s Students Need to Know!
In collaboration with members of the WU faculty, students, and a programmer, the International Office has developed a new application process for exchange semesters. This new process applies to bachelor’s students and brings several updates. We spoke with the project team from the International Office to learn more.
WU Blog: You have developed a new application process for exchange semesters. What makes the new process different?
International Office: The new application process considers both the academic performance of the students and their personal suitability for an exchange stay. Academic performance is assessed through the so-called Academic Score, which reflects the weighted overall grade average. In contrast, personal suitability is evaluated through the Extra-Curricular Score.
To determine the Extra-Curricular Score, students fill out an Application Sheet (questionnaire) and, after submitting their online application, participate in an interview with a member of the WU faculty. This member evaluates the Extra-Curricular Score based on the criteria of motivation, engagement, social & intercultural skills, as well as personal impressions.
At the end of the application process, all applicants receive an overall score, which serves as the basis for the allocation of exchange places.
WU Blog: What can you tell us about the development of the new process?
International Office: The development of the process involved intensive collaboration. We held round tables and bilateral discussions with WU faculty and students. The WU faculty plays a central role in the new process: they conduct mandatory interviews with applicants and evaluate the Extra-Curricular Score.
Additionally, a user-friendly interface for the online application has been developed to ensure clarity for all parties involved – students, faculty, and us.
WU Blog: What are the advantages of the new application process?
International Office: The greatest advantage is that all parties involved have the same access to information. The application process and assessment criteria are publicly communicated on our website. Because the application process is standardized, all applicants have a comparable experience.
Another advantage is that there is only one application period during which a total of up to seven preferences from Europe and overseas can be selected.
WU Blog: When will the new application process be implemented?
International Office: We will start implementing it this winter semester. The first application period during which the new process will be in effect runs from December 2, 2024 (2:00pm) to December 6, 2024 (2:00pm).
WU Blog: What tips do you have? What should applicants pay attention to when applying for an exchange semester?
International Office: It is advisable to choose as many preferences as possible. However, one should only apply if they are truly certain about wanting to undertake a semester abroad. Another important tip is to present yourself authentically and with self-reflection. Applicants should clearly articulate the personal value that the international experience holds for them.
