MSc Marketing: Insights from the First Alumni

The WU Vienna’s MSc Marketing program was established in 2012 as a joint Master’s program of all Institutes at the Marketing Department. Since then, around 150 students have been or are being educated to be Marketing experts. My name is Žiga Lešnik and I am one of the first alumni of the program, who finished their studies in October 2014. Many of my former fellow students are now employed in different countries, industries and positions.

Probably every master student has wondered whether the knowledge he or she gained during their studies would be of any use after entering the “real world.” In my opinion, one of the main advantages of the MSc Marketing program at WU is its close collaboration with industry and its hands-on teaching approach that allows students to deal with real-world business challenges. During my studies here, I had the chance to complement these experiences with internships at the Nivea producer Beiersdorf and the FMCG giant Procter & Gamble, where I gained additional valuable industry insights and not only applied but  and also significantly improved my marketing- management skills. During my second year in the program, I specialized in consulting and was working closely with two small high-tech companies as a part of the curriculum. This experience sparked my interest in management consulting, and after finishing graduating in 2014, I ended up working for leading management consultancy Simon Kucher & Partners in Marketing & Sales.

I am also one of the founding members of the MSc Marketing Club, an association that links the Marketing Master’s students, alumni, faculty and affiliated companies. The Club organizes social events such as regular monthly get-togethers, Christmas parties and end-of-semester events which are a great chance to get to know each other and also enable the direct contact to professors. Beyond that, the Club puts an emphasis on building bridges to marketing practice: It  collaborates with different marketing conferences, fairs and shows, such as the Marketing Rockstars Festival, the Dietmar Dahmen Marketing and Sales show, and the Mobile Marketing Innovation Day. Finally, a key priority of the MSc Marketing Club is to foster the growing community by establishing an alumni network. This not only enables graduates to stay in contact among each other and with current students, but also to allows them to exchange valuable information about the program and work experiences and opportunities.
