Eva Laznik, PhD Candidate in Finance, Vienna University of Economics and Business
Choosing to pursue a Master’s in Quantitative Finance (QFin) at WU was one of the best decisions I could have made for my academic and professional growth. The program’s blend of rigorous quantitative training and finance knowledge opened doors to invaluable opportunities, equipping me with a skill set that has already proven essential as I embark on my PhD journey at WU.
The QFin curriculum stands out not only for its academic rigor but also for its flexibility. Students can choose between the Industry Track, which offers direct exposure to the financial sector, and the Science Track, which nurtures a strong research foundation. I found this freedom to shape my studies invaluable, as it allowed me to explore complex financial topics through both theoretical and practical lenses. The support I received from professors along with the unwavering guidance from our program manager, was a cornerstone of my experience. They were not just educators but mentors who invested in our success and well-being, making the challenging journey feel manageable and rewarding.
Beyond academics, QFin provided an environment where collaboration and camaraderie thrived. Our cohort came from diverse backgrounds – finance, mathematics, economics, engineering – and it was this diversity that enriched our learning. Together, we navigated complex concepts, tackled late-night study sessions, and celebrated each milestone, forming friendships that I know will last a lifetime. The shared experiences, from intense company talks to memorable social gatherings, created a bond among us that extends beyond the classroom.
What I particularly appreciated about QFin is how it fostered a holistic approach to finance education. Through the program’s industry connections (e.g., company talks and workshops), I gained insights from leading companies and had the chance to engage with professionals who generously shared their knowledge. These experiences not only expanded my network but also prepared me for a career where I feel ready to tackle real-world financial challenges.
Today, as I continue my research on mutual funds and investor behavior, I carry forward the skills, confidence, and friendships I gained in QFin. I am grateful to be part of such a prestigious program that is more than just a stepping stone to a career – it is a community that empowers its students to grow into impactful professionals.
