More than ever, researchers and research institutions are expected to focus their work both on ideals of social relevance and responsibility, as well as on ideas of scientific excellence.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Being one of the guiding principles of its mission, the topic of \u201cresponsibility\u201d is incorporated on all organizational levels and in a broad variety of initiatives, institutions and research projects at WU. Responsible research and adherence to high ethical standards are among the key principles, which all WU researchers and faculty members are expected to observe. Academic integrity is seen as an indispensable requirement of academic work, essential to the reputation of researchers and research institutions. In 2016, the Vice-Rector of Research and the Research Committee of the WU Senate compiled a Directive on responsible research and academic integrity.<\/p>\n<p>Excellent research and research-led teaching are crucial elements of WU\u2019s identity. Although academic research with a high impact on academic discourse has a high priority within WU\u2019s strategic goals, WU is aware that valuable contributions are not merely for the scientific community, but for the society in general.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Open Science \u2013 contributing to the community<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>WU sees it as part of its responsibility to society to provide the public with unlimited and long-term access to academic literature and research results. That is why WU aims at making academic work published by its researchers available online following the principle of &#8220;Open Access\u201d and \u201cOpen Data\u201d. In 2016, WU published an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wu.ac.at\/en\/library\/service\/open-access\/open-access-at-wu\/open-access-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Open Access Policy<\/a>, encouraging its researchers to publish their work on open access platforms.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, WU offers support by providing an <a href=\"http:\/\/epub.wu.ac.at\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Institutional Repository (ePub)<\/a>\u00a0and a central Publication Fund to help WU-affiliated authors cover the charges for Open Access publications. In concerns of Open Data, WU established an <a href=\"http:\/\/data.wu.ac.at\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Open Data Portal<\/a>, the first to run by an Austrian University, in December 2014.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Knowledge Transfer and Research Communication<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Following the principles of Responsible Research and Open Science, WU has taken several steps to increase the visibility of research in the public sphere. In March 2016, an initiative called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wu.ac.at\/en\/research\/wu-researchers\/\">Researcher of the Month (RoM)<\/a> was introduced. Each month, a member of the faculty is presented over a variety of channels, in order to to create awareness of the many-sided nature of WU&#8217;s research. In addition, WU\u2019s public lecture series \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wu.ac.at\/en\/wu-matters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wu matters. wu talks<\/a>\u201d invites people to discuss current topics together with WU\u2019s researchers on a regular base.<\/p>\n<p>The many ways in which WU\u2019s re\u00adsearch\u00aders co\u00adoper\u00adate with members of so\u00adci\u00adety have long since be\u00adcome one of WU\u2019s dis\u00adtin\u00adguish\u00ading qual\u00adit\u00adies, and they are an ex\u00adpres\u00adsion of WU\u2019s so\u00adcial com\u00admit\u00adment and its fu\u00adture- and prac\u00adtice-ori\u00adented ap\u00adproach to re\u00adsearch. Many of WU\u2019s fields of research portray the need of scientific answers to relevant societal challenges. Therefore, WU trusts in an im\u00adpact-ori\u00adented re\u00adsearch cul\u00adture, which em\u00adphas\u00adizes sus\u00adtain\u00adable think\u00ading and act\u00ading re\u00adspons\u00adibly to help find solu\u00adtions to today\u2019s eco\u00adnomic, so\u00adcial, and eco\u00adlo\u00adgical prob\u00adlems.<\/p>\n<p>#responsibilityweek #nachhaltigkeit #knowledgetransfer #research #openscience<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Politics and society increasingly rely on science and research to cope with the great challenges of our time.
